The President Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho G.Musa on Saturday 5th October 2024, organised a breast cancer awareness walk campaign with the theme “No One Should Face Breast Cancer Alone” this event kicked off from the DEPOWA Secretariat in Asokoro as part of activities to commemorate the breast cancer awareness month.
Notably present at the event was the Special Guest of Honour,(SGOH), the wife of the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Vice President of the Renewed Hope Initiative, Her Excellency, Hajia Nana Shettima, who was represented by Dr Asabe Vilita, DG Maryam Babagingida Women Center, Abuja,the wife of the Minister of Sports of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs Racheal Owan-Enoh, representative of the wives of service chiefs, DEPOWA Coordinators, Members of DEPOWA, NAOWA, NOWA, NAFOWA, and POWA. Soldiers Wives from NASWA, NORWA, AWA, PEWA. Members of the Military Widows Association (MIWA) were also present at the event.
In her remarks at the event, the DEPOWA President acknowledged that the gathering was to honour survivors, remember loved ones lost, and reaffirm the dedication to eradicating breast cancer. She emphasized the need to know that early detection saves lives, mammogram screening, breast self-examination, and education are crucial.
The SGOH, during her remarks, commended the DEPOWA President for striving towards contributing to the success of the global campaign to increase awareness of breast cancer,
She further urged participants to create awareness and share information about the risk factors associated with breast cancer. Promote screening and encourage regular mammograms for early detection.Provide resources and share information about available care services and support networks.
She stated that by working together, we can empower ourselves and our communities with knowledge, leading to earlier diagnosis and, ultimately, better outcomes for those affected.
Highlights of the event include a health talk by the chairperson of DEPOWA Health Committee, Dr Juliette Ango, distribution of fliers, the breast cancer awareness walk, and group photographs.
