The Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) marked the grand finale of its Inter-Secondary School Sports Competition with a closing ceremony held at the Guards Brigade Sports Complex, Aguyi Ironsi Cantonment, Abuja.
The colourful event brought together dignitaries, students, teachers, and members of DEPOWA and other affiliated associations in a lively atmosphere to celebrate teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship that climaxed the sports and lectures for a period of 4 weeks where school students showcased their talents in football and volleyball. The competition served as a platform not only for sporting excellence but also for learning, mentorship, and advocacy.
As part of the programme’s broader vision, facilitators engaged the students in an enlightening session on the theme “Live Free, Stay Clean,”. Lectures on the dangers of drugs, its harmful effects and the importance of making positive life choices were delivered. The advocacy session reinforced DEPOWA’s commitment to nurturing disciplined, drug-free, and morally upright youths.
The Special Guest of Honour, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, OFR, Chief of Defence Staff, in his remarks, commended DEPOWA for its remarkable efforts in promoting youth development through sports and advocacy. He emphasized that secondary school sports remain the cradle where global champions are discovered and nurtured, citing renowned athletes whose journeys began at that level. Drawing from his personal experience, participation in sports, particularly basketball, instilled in him discipline, focus, and leadership values that continue to guide his service to the nation.
The Chief of Defence Staff further lauded the DEPOWA President, Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa and her team for providing a platform that fosters teamwork, character building, and national unity among students. He noted that such initiatives are sowing seeds for future stars and reaffirmed the importance of empowering young Nigerians to dream, strive, and achieve greatness through sports.
In her vote of thanks, the President of DEPOWA, Mrs. Oghogho Gwabin Musa expressed he heartfelt appreciation to the Chief of Defence Staff, dignitaries, facilitators, and all participants for their unwavering support and contributions to the success of the competition. She commended the students for their dedication, discipline, and teamwork, noting that their passion and commitment reflect the promise of a brighter future for the nation. Mrs. Musa also thanked the organizers, coaches, and teachers for their mentorship and guidance, emphasizing that the event not only showcased sporting talent but also strengthened character, unity, and the holistic development of young minds.
Highlights of the event included the football finals (boys and girls), cultural dance performances, a health talk on drug abuse by Mr David Folaranmi, the presentation of trophies, medals and certificates to schools, and group photographs.
