As part of activities marking this year’s International Widows Day 2024, The President Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho Gwabin Musa has advocated for continues support for wives of fallen heroes.
Mrs Musa made this call while speaking at the DEPOWA International Widows Day 2024.
The event was held on Friday, in 21 June 2024, at the General Gabriel Abayomi Olonisakin multi-purpose hall DEPOWA school, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.
In her remarks, The President DEPOWA stated that the International Widows Day is deemed by the United Nations to raise awareness about the plight of widows worldwide and to advocate for their rights and well-being stating that the day serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by widows and the need to address their unique social, economic, health and legal issues.
According to the President DEPOWA, she stated that historically, widows have been left unseen, unsupported and unmeasured in the societies, hence the unique experience and needs of widows especially in the military setting must be brought to the fore front and their voices heard.
Delivering her goodwill message, the Mother of the Day Mrs Alero Azazi who was a former President DEPOWA appreciated Mrs Oghogho Musa for organizing the event and encouraged wives of fallen heroes to open smaller support groups that widows can easily seek for assistance as additional support that may be recieving from family members and the community.
Dignitaries present at the occasion were the representative of the President NAOWA Mrs Oyinye Akpor, representative of President NOWA Mrs Hadiza Zipele Bukola, the President NAFOWA, Architect Rakiya Abubakar, the President POWA, Dr Mrs Elizabeth Egbetokun and
members of Officers’ Wives Associations, amongst others.
Highlights of the event were medical screening , interactive sessions, cultural display, presentation of souvenirs, and group photographs.
